The Amazon Spheres
Seattle, Washington, 2018
Architect: NBBJ
“The Spheres are a place where employees can think
and work differently surrounded by plants”
Can you imagine going to work every day surrounded by beautiful, warm natural light and nature? Unless you work in a profession requiring you to be outside working with nature, most professionals do not have great exposure to the natural world during their workday. But one modern-day business magnate decided to make the change for his workforce, creating an environment that promotes the well-being of his corporate workforce!
The Amazon Sphere Conservatories are made up of three jewel-like glass domes mounted on steel framing that form the centerpiece of Amazon’s Seattle headquarters. The glass panels have a complex geometry of irregular pentagonal facets, each with multiple panels, which create a shape called a pentagonal hexecontahedron. Enclosed within the spheres is an employee lounge, cafeteria, workspace, and a treehouse meeting room! Designers even created a “living wall” of 25,000 plants!
Recognition of the health benefits associated with contact with nature has long been driving public interest in conservatories worldwide, but the spheres seek to integrate nature with daily work! The Spheres are intended to increase Amazon employees’ contact with the natural world and enhance their health, sense of well-being, and creativity. The architecture firm behind this incredible building, NBBJ, says it designed the space to give workers the opportunity to engage with “a rich natural environment” that helps them “think more collaboratively and creatively”.
